Cycling Toronto to Montreal: How we did it

Man and woman on touring bikes with text that reads cycling toronto to montreal

I recently returned from a trip with my partner cycling from Toronto to Montreal along the Waterfront Trail. It was a beautiful ride, but not without its hiccups along the way!

After 3 days cycling from Toronto to Kingston, we had about 300km to go when an unexpected event made us question if getting to Montreal would even be possible. Watch the video and learn more about our day to day itinerary below.

Day 4

On day 4 the Waterfront Trail took us through Kingston. We had rain on and off as we rode along a rather busy stretch of Highway 2. But before long we were on a beautiful, well-paved cycleway separated from the main road. The rain eased up and we had a sunny ride to our Warmshowers host.

Day 5

On day 5 we woke from a good sleep in our tent on our host’s lush property. We tried to beat the rain but got hit with it pretty early. We were met with a rough stretch of road as the Waterfront Trail took us along a narrow and broken up shoulder along Highway 2. We narrowly avoided a couple downpours by popping into some conveniently-located shelters and made it to another welcoming Warmshowers host.

Day 6

Day 6 brought with it one of our most beautiful sections of riding as we cycled along the quiet roads of the Parks of the St Lawrence. We were treated to beautiful views of the water, cheerful waves from other cyclists and plenty of well-paved cycleways. After a fortifying, early dinner, we crossed the border into Québec. Unfortunately nighttime came too quickly and the darkness contributed to an event that nearly ended our trip. Find out more in the VIDEO.

Day 7

Fortunately, the kind owner of the Motel des Érables took us in last minute and we were able to regroup and continue on towards Montreal. The rain started hard but eventually let up and we enjoyed a misty but not overly wet ride along Québec’s nice cycleways into Montreal where our warm Air B&B was waiting for us.
