Dairy-Free Matcha Green Tea Latte (Vegan)

Matcha Latte

As far as matcha goes, I would have to consider myself a novice. Up until recently I had a tin of organic matcha in my pantry but I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do with it. Then, a lovely friend of mine brought me a plain matcha tea — just matcha powder whisked into hot water. I loved it. And now I’m hooked. Within the span of a month or so I’ve greatly depleted my little tin as I’ve enjoyed a matcha latte almost every morning instead of my usual coffee.

As I did more reading on matcha I discovered it has antioxidants and polyphenols which help boost the immune system, theophylline which is a slow-release version of caffeine to give you a longer-lasting energy boost, and the amino acid l-theanine which offers calmness and mental clarity. Or in other words, it’s pretty darn good for you!

If you’re looking to take a break from coffee, matcha is a great alternative. It’s warm and comforting to wake up to just like your usual coffee but comes with more health benefits, and if you ask me, it’s even yummier!

Over the last few weeks I have played around and found the following recipe to be my favourite way to prepare my morning matcha latte. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Makes 1

Ingredients:

  • Water
  • Unsweetened almond milk
  • 2-4 tablespoons full-fat coconut milk (depending on desired creaminess)
  • 6 drops liquid stevia (more or less, to taste — or substitute sweetener of choice)
  • 1 teaspoon matcha powder

Directions:

  1. Fill a mug to just under half full with almond milk. Add desired amount of coconut milk (I tend to use 3 tablespoons). Pour into a small saucepan and place on stove over medium-high heat.
  2. While milk is warming, boil water in a kettle. When the water is boiled, place matcha in mug and stir in hot water until just under halfway full.
  3. When milk is heated pour it into the mug. Add stevia. Liquid should be about a centimeter from the rim of the mug. If not, add a little more hot water. If there’s too much, just proceed to the next step and you’ll have a little extra!
  4. Pour liquid into a blender and blend on low to medium for no more than 10 seconds to froth it up. Return to mug and enjoy!
