Bikepacking Overnighter Gear List & Tips for Beginners

If you’re looking for a bikepacking overnighter gear list, this post is for you!

Heading off on a bikepacking “overnighter” or “weekender” is a great way to have a bicycle adventure for two major reasons.

Firstly, you can do it with a limited budget and time. No need to use up your valuable vacation days or spend heaps of money on flights, you can simply hit the road from your door, or take the car or a train to a nearby bike route.

Secondly, it’s a great opportunity to test the waters for those who are new to bike touring, or haven’t done it in a while. You can see how your body feels and how your gear performs without being too far from home.

I recently headed off on an overnighter, and thought I’d share with you what I brought. The important thing to remember here, of course, is that everyone’s needs and preferences are individual when bikepacking. There are as many unique bikepacking gear lists as there are bikepackers! But hopefully the list below gives you some ideas for how to pack for your first, or next, overnight bikepacking trip.

This is at no cost to you and helps me continue making videos and sharing bike touring information and resources. If you don’t see a link it’s likely because I’ve either forgotten what the brand/model is or could no longer find it. I only link to products I am using myself and loving. Thank you for your support!

  1. What recommendations do you have for keeping your shoes dry in rainy weather? I have rain pants and waterproof shoes but find the water runs off the pants into my shoes. On my last trip, my shoes were soaked for days. I hate to buy and carry shoe covers, if there is another cheaper option.

  2. Hello. Thanks for providing an exhaustive list. I was just curious, Did you end up reducing the width of the Velo Orange Crazy Bar? Or are you still fine with the large width of 770 mm?

    1. I haven’t yet! I’m going to take them on a longer tour soon and possibly get a bike fit and decide from there šŸ™‚
